The Bush administration, using tired rhetoric and idiotic scare tactics linked to 9/11, all under the guise of safety, has bashed our rights and freedoms as few, if any, national administrations preceding it. I will take the risks rather than give up an ounce of freedom. Now there is an outfit that takes a lot of guff and ridicule for its stance on things. That is odd as its primary goal is to protect the Bill of Rights from erosion. Given Bush has one, and possibly two, vacancies to fill on the Supreme Court, the impact of nominating two conservatives could have an impact of the Bill of Rights beyond our grasp. The aforesaid outfit is the ACLU: American Civil Liberties Union and you can become a card carrying member for $10 at http://aclu.org. Worse yet, you can send the ACLU a monthly donation charged to a credit card. Seems a bargain to me as my entire Kentucky delegation voted for the flag burning amendment. I love the flag and will not likely ever burn one but I want to reserve that right as that right is at the core of what the USA is all about and what the flag is a symbol of. Dissent and protest and the right of assembly and to petition are basic to our way of life. They are the consequence of brilliant leaders and the will of the people and have stood the test of time. Erosion: "the wearing away of", bit by bit, one seemingly unimportant speck at a time, until one day there is no more. Flag burning one day, property rights the next, a free press another - what's next from these crazies? Join and support the ACLU or trust government - your choice.
